USA 2016 - Day 4

Late the next morning we were driven from Torrance to Long Beach Airport to catch our flight to Las Vegas. Having heard horror predictions of long queues at US airports over the summer, we got there three hours early, prepared for the worst. In the end we were given TSA pre-check status by the JetBlue check-in assistant, enabling us to skip the long queues at security and avoid the indignity of having to remove our shoes. We spent some of the time we had left feasting on yummy burritos at an eatery inside the terminal.

We arrived in Las Vegas mid-afternoon and were immediately overwhelmed by the heat - in the high 30s as opposed to the mid 20s in LA. We took a taxi to our hotel, the Vdara, a new high-rise on the strip that distinguishes itself from the opposition by not having a casino and being non-smoking (most of the big hotels on the strip have smoke-filled casinos and even shopping malls attached). Our room was on the 40th floor and had a view of the famous fountain at the Bellagio Hotel. After settling in and watching the fountain for a while, we headed out for a short walk and to check out the shops at the nearby Miracle Mile. On the way we stopped to buy some food to eat in our room. We were both feeling a bit overwhelmed by the heat and the frenzied atmosphere of Vegas.
