Today we went to the Napa Valley. Early in the morning we walked down to the Ferry Building and caught a ferry to Valejo. The ferry was late leaving because of a "medical emergency" involving one of the passengers on the sailing before ours. We had to wait over half an hour for an ambulance to arrive and for the passenger to be removed before we could board. Luckily we made up some time and weren't too late arriving in Valejo, where a bus was waiting to take us to the train station at Napa.
The Napa Valley Wine Train train runs on tracks laid in the 1860s, and consists of refurbished Pullman cars from the 1910s pulled by FPA-4 Diesel Locomotives built in the 1950s. We had lunch on board as we completed a three-hour return trip up the valley. We had had the option of getting off along the way to do a winery tour, but it was hot outside (35 degrees compared to 23 in SF), and in the end we we were glad we elected to stay on board the air-conditioned train. The scenery actually wasn't anything to write home about, but the food and wine were excellent!
