We had considered taking the train to nearby Aix-en-Province (which we had fond memories of from our first trip to Europe together over 20 years ago) during our stay in Marseille, but in the end chose to remain in the city. After wondering around the touristy Old Port area and up the main shopping street, we headed up into the hilly Panier district, getting lost in the narrow streets before eventually finding the Cathedrale de la Nouvelle Major with its distinctive stripes. We also bought some soap.
